Plaudits for newcomer Ukraine's import licensing efforts

The Philippines — the US said it understands the Philippines requires import licences for telecommunications equipment although it has not notified this, and asked for details. The Philippines said its reply would be circulated shortly.

Questions were also asked about Viet Nam's automatic import licensing regime, China's requirements for iron ore, Argentina's licensing for footwear and toys, and US requirements for controlled substances.

China's transitional review
In this seventh review China said there had been no major changes in its regime since the previous review a year ago. The US asked about China's scheme for registering cotton suppliers and requiring licences for imports from suppliers that have not been registered. China said the scheme is needed in order to ensure that the huge volume it imports meets quality standards, avoids pests and prevents fraud.

The transitional reviews are required annually for the first eight years under China's membership agreement, and once more after 10 years.
