Amanda Aldridge, Acting Head of Retail, KPMG comments that another difficult month for UK retail with figures only marginally improved on September. Unusually warm and wet weather has discouraged shoppers from making those higher value winter purchases – boots, winter coats etc, resulting in a poor month for clothing and footwear retailers, particularly in menswear.
Furniture, floor coverings and DIY have had a better month driven by promotional activity and cashing in on consumers' desire to get that new sofa or carpet in before Christmas. As the Christmas peak gets later each year, the big questions out there are how much extra promotional activity will be required to drive the Christmas numbers and who will lose their nerve and bring their sale forward?”
