Cotton Seed Distributors Ltd's (CSD) John Marshall stated that the area of cotton planted on the Darling Downs is likely to be slightly above last year's 56,000 hectares.
CSD's Dalby-based extension and development agronomist John Marshall informed that some parts of the Downs have received close to 250mm since mid-October, and some replanting is currently underway due to heavy rains in the first week of November.
An additional area is being planted in response to pumping into storages, which has continued intermittently over the last 10 days, and also enhanced soil moisture for dryland growers.
The Central Queensland area is also recovering from the effects of a very wet period during planting, and some damaging hail storms, both of which resulted in some replanting.
He added that the final area at Emerald could be approximately 12,000ha, with most recent irrigation allocation of 53 per cent, a considerable improvement on a couple of months ago. Theodore will have its full area of around 6000ha, with full water availability.
