Cotton seed supplier Cotton Seed Distributors Ltd's extension and development agronomist in the region, James Quinn stated that the germination and emergence has been very good with very little replant needed throughout the valley.

Irrigated cotton plantings in the Gwydir Valley will embrace 60,000 hectares, with an additional 20,000-30,000ha planted to dryland cotton.

Cooler temperatures in the first week of October coupled with storm rains have affected some of the early crops with seedling diseases such as black root rot and pythium, but crops planted in the latter half October have really come on 'in leaps and bounds.

James Quinn stated that Dryland planting started after good general rain in mid-October and follow up showers of 15-20 mm have ensured good establishment in these fields. Earlier planted crops have begun to square, with good soil moisture and warm, humid conditions ideal for growth.

Nation's cotton seed supplier CSD also supplies the details of varieties, agronomy, trials and disease treatment. CSD utilises the most modern technologies and infrastructure to bring forward the highest quality planting seed possible, in the quantities and time frames required, for all growers.
