4. You are fully aware of the importance of textiles in the national economy. Currently, it contributes about 14 percent to the industrial production. It provides direct employment to about 35 million (approx.) persons.

This includes many to those sections of the population, such as women, artisans, weavers, marginal and small farmers, whose social economic upliftment is the UPA Government's commitment, and has been duly enshrined in Common Minimum Programme. We are committed to enhance the welfare and well being of the workers particularly hand loom weavers and handicraft artisans in the unorganised sector by providing social security, health insurance etc.

Textile sector is also a major contributor of foreign exchange earnings for the nation with exports of about 13 billion US Dollars. Industrial production increased by 10.3% during first quarter of 2005-06 and export of textile products registered a growth of 5.2% during April-August 2005.

The per capita availability of cloth has gone up from 22.9 sq. metres in 1991-92 to about 31.0 sq. metres in 2003-04 (Provisional). Domestic investment in textiles during first quarter of 2005-06 was encouraging as per progress of important plan schemes like TUFS, Apparel Parks & TCIDS.
