Macquarie Valley Optimism
Craig McDonald said the Macquarie Valley is set to receive an increased water allocation following recent flooding rain in catchment areas. New allocations of around 20 per cent are expected now that Burrendong Dam is up to 45 per cent of capacity.
The cotton area planted in the Macquarie is over 15,000ha, which is an increase on last season's area, but still well down on the potential of over 50,000ha. Many growers were able to get this season's crop established on rainfall, which meant being able to get a crop in for many with little or no water.
He included that this latest expected increase in allocation will extend many of these crop's chances of growing through to picking with associated benefits to the whole community. Mild spring conditions so far have assisted in getting crops off to a very good start.
