“And it means that brands and retailers need work to build relationships with trade unions, by disclosing details of their supply chain, demonstrating their willingness to work at all levels, and showing they mean business by ensuring their suppliers comply in upholding national laws and international standards".

Concluded Mr Kearney: “Building mature industrial relations throughout the industy won't be easy. It requires shifting responsibility to new, more relevant structures which link the global level to national and plant level. And it needs to be a worker-led initiative".

“But the first step in achieving this objective is to recognise that code implementation through social auditing is not sustainable in the long term, and that a mature system of industrial relations which hands ownership of the employment relationship to managers and workers is the only real way forward”.
