This Trade Union World Briefing report will be launched in conjunction with a briefing prepared by SOLIDAR, a Brussels-based NGO, on the impact of the current Non-Agricultural Market Access proposals, making the urgent case for full prior impact assessments before any deal is truck in Hong Kong or beyond.

- Friday, December 9: Launch of Whose miracle: How China's workers are paying the price for its economic boom
To be launched on the eve of International Human Rights Day, this report examines the dirty underbelly of the so-called Chinese miracle. Whilst the world's economists celebrate the 9 percent yearly growth of the Chinese economy, its workers experience the highest incidence of workplace deaths and injuries, are denied the right to collectively organise and belong to free trade unions and work under some of the most repressive conditions in the world.

The report gives an in-depth analysis of the rise in income inequality and rural poverty caused by the changing economy, and puts to the test claims that China's accession to the WTO will play any part in future poverty alleviation.

The report will be launched at a press conference in Hong Kong (venue and time TBC), with Guy Ryder, Secretary of the ICFTU and Elizabeth Tang, the Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Council of Trade Unions and Chair of the Hong Kong People's Alliance. Chinese workers from the region will also be present.

The ICFTU is a confederation of 215 national trade union centers. It was set up in 1949 and has 233 affiliated organisations in 154 countries and territories on all five continents, with a membership of 145 million, 40 percent of who are women.
