EURATEX seeks genuine liberalisation of textile markets

Expressing ambitions of EURATEX in view of the forthcoming WTO meet in Hong Kong President Filiep Liebeert said that tarrifs should not exceed over 15% while providing genuine market access for all members of the World Trade Organisation.

He announced this at a special press conference held in Brussels recently, to brief the world press on the association's position and expectations on going WTO negotiations.

"What we are looking for in the context of the Hong Kong Ministerial meeting of WTO and its follow-up is an acceptance from WTO members that globalisation in textiles and clothing is not just a one-way street," said Liebeert.

In conclusion, EURATEX seeks:

· Genuine market access to all WTO members through
· Tariff reductions down to our EU levels
· The elimination of non-tariff barriers
· The full participation of all except the least developed
· In the shortest possible time
· Whilst retaining adequate margins of EU preference
