Central Silk Board of Karnataka has filed a case against China for silk fabric dumping before the Director General, Anti-Dumping Cell, New Delhi and sought imposition of anti-dumping duty on the goods therefrom, informed CSB officials .
Following supply trend supply from China of silk fabrics, CSB learnt that they were sold at prices lower than production costs in India. CSB immediately brought the matter to the notice of DG, Anti-Dumping Cell.
While India is the largest consumer of silk, it is second to China in terms of silk production.
Silk production in 2004-05 was 16,500 tons in India and exports in the last fiscal were Rs 2879.56 crore.
India has set silk output target of 17000 tons this year.
From April to August 2005-06, silk exports from India recorded an increase of 8.1 percent to Rs 1132.01 crore compared to the corresponding period last year.
Notably, since last four years, India has imposed anti-dumping duty on certain Chinese yarns. Will silk foollow the route is anyone's guess?
