Cotton Seed Distributors Ltd (CSD) informed that The Cotton Research and Development Corporation and Cotton Catchment Communities CRC have discovered the use of Precision Agriculture (PA) for cotton production at the 2005 Farming Systems Forum held in Goondiwindi.
The forum presented both cutting edge Australian research findings and practical uses for PA technology to a range of industry personnel including cotton growers, consultants and researchers.
Knowledge shared during the forum included the day to day uses and economic benefits of technologies such as Electro Magnetic (EM) surveys, precision irrigation techniques, variable rate application and remote sensing.
The Forum also included opportunities for farmers and consultants to input into the industry's future research, development and extension plans.
Forum organiser and CRDC Project Co-coordinator, Helen Dugdale states that it was clear from the Forum that the extension of precision agriculture research coupled with training in current technologies is now a priority for the industry.
She stated that a great deal of very high tech and precise equipment is currently on the market and if they are to fully integrate PA technologies into day to day cotton production, it is essential that growers have an informed and balanced view about what is currently available and the economic implications of using these technologies in their business.
Speakers from outside the cotton industry also passed on their knowledge and expertise in this area, and both the CRDC and CRC are optimistic that collaboration with other industries, such as grains, mining and viticulture, could lead to the increased understanding and adoption of the most appropriate PA technologies.
The findings and outcomes of the Forum will now be digested by CRDC and the CRC and integrated into future research and extension plans.
