Research and development organization Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) reported the wool spinning activity in Italy.
A look at consolidated data shows Italy's wool fibre imports during the first half of 2005 were 68.1 mkg clean equivalents, down moderately compared with January-June a year ealier.
Greasy wool imports were similarly lower whilst wool top import was marginally lower. Although scoured wool imports showed a rise there was a large fall in noil imports.
It estimated that wool and fine hair consumed in spinning was lower overall by 4 percent during January-June 2005.
Wool consumed in worsted spinning was estimated to be lower by 3 percent during the period January-June 2005, while wool consumed in woollen spinning was estimated to be more severely affected and lower by approximately 6 percent.
AWI initiates, commissions and delivers research and development (R&D) to Australian woolgrowers. Company work through alliances and contracts and, where possible, commercialise company R&D outcomes. The primary aim is the adoption of technology - on farm and along the global wool pipeline.
