Differences between the Union Ministry of Textiles and the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution on raw jute price may hit supply of B Twill jute bags for packaging sugar and foodgrains during the coming Rabi season.

In a notification, the Ministry of Textiles had authorized the Jute Commissioner to fix a reasonable price for any variety of raw jute, which guarantees continuous trading in the commodity.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution considers that the notification of textiles department does not at all meet objectives of the National Jute Policy framed and approved by Textile Ministry itself.

Ministry has also raised objections against notification claiming that Textile Ministry did not seek advice from Food Ministry before issuing such a notification. Such notifications must be issued after obtaining consensus of food department.

The Ministry also alleged that it was issued to please jute industry at the cost of jute farmers.

Therefore, Food Ministry requested Textiles Ministry to notify Jute Commissioner not to act on the issued notification.

Hence, the notification on price fixation by the Jute Commissioner remains ineffective.
