Responsible business practices are no longer just a desirable luxury for global corporations and wealthier nations. They are an increasingly powerful competitive pre-requisite and opportunity for emerging economies to advance their business communities into the heart of the global economy.

AccountAbility, a London based think-tank, has just published a new report entitled Responsible Competitiveness: Reshaping Global Markets through Responsible Business Practices. The centerpiece of the report is the Responsible Competitiveness Index (RCI) which estimates the statistical relationship between the state of corporate responsibility and the competitiveness of nations.

With over 80 nations in the RCI, the criterion includes data on corruption, civic freedom, environmental management and corporate governance in each country. The results of this research were then combined with the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Global Competitiveness Index. The results suggest that corporate responsibility may indeedbe a driver of a country's - or a region's - competitiveness.
