Specifications for the scope and structure of the assessment system In terms of scope, the assessment system will concentrate on the core area of a commercial laundry, namely the processing of the washing. It should be possible to give a clear statement about its sustainability, expressed in a single value. Structurally, the system should be designed so that it takes due account of national circumstances, but also allows for the establishment of an international sustainability network, to include benchmarking.
Basic principle of the Hohenstein sustainability assessment system The basic principle of the system is that the main environmentally-relevant areas of a laundry are evaluated using a specially developed ecological scale (eco-grades 0 to 3) and categorised according to operational control factors. From this, eco-points are calculated, from which, as an interim result, the level of machine ecology and process ecology for that area can be derived. This in turn provides the evaluation and operational control indices, which are combined to produce the final sustainability index rating.
