The Kaduna textile Industry, once a major employer and economic driver in Nigeria, has witnessed a significant decline.
The industry, centered around companies like Kaduna Textiles Ltd (KTL) and United Nigerian Textiles Limited (UNTL), faced numerous challenges, including internal issues like power shortages and outdated equipment, external pressures like competition from cheaper imports, and the impact of structural adjustment programmes.
The decline led to factory closures, job losses, and hardship for many workers and their families.
“We intend to revisit those good old days of the Kaduna Textile to further boost and solidify the economy of the country via industrialisation,” Akume told a two-day interactive session on engagement between government and citizens in Kaduna.
“The [President Bola] Tinubu administration intends to industrialise the country through diversification. We are looking at those days of Kaduna Textile and many other industrialised areas in the north,” he added.
The event was organised by Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation, according to a domestic new agency.
