Pakistan retracts unofficial ban on Indian cotton imports

Pakistan has retracted the unofficial ban that was imposed by its ministry of national food security and research on Indian cotton imports through Wagah border and Karachi port last month. The country had recently rejected a consignment of 10,000 bales of cotton from India citing violations of plant quarantine rules by importers as the reason.

A rise in border tensions between the two neighbouring countries was believed to be the reason for rejecting the India cotton consignment worth $3.3 million last month.

The department of plant protection (DPP) of the Pakistani ministry of national food security and research has begun issuing permits for importing Indian cotton through Wagah border.

About two-third of the total ginned cotton exported from India, amounting to over $800 million, was sent to Pakistan last year.

Pakistan's cotton output took a hit of 27 per cent in 2015, causing the country's GDP rate to fall by 0.5 per cent. (KD)
