The Gondalpara Jute Mill in Hooghly district of West Bengal state in eastern part of India has been rescued from permanent closure. A tripartite meeting between the mill management, the state Labour Department officials and representatives of trade unions agreed to reopen the mill from June 1, 2023, after completion of the maintenance work.

The jute mill at Chandannagar employing around 3,800 workers is shut since January 1 this year, with the management claiming shortage of raw jute as the main reason behind the suspension of work.

The tripartite meeting, chaired by state Labour Minister Becharam Manna, held on Monday, was attended by representatives of 11 trade unions, according to officials of the state Labour Department.

The West Bengal government had earlier said that several thousand workers have been rendered jobless following the closure of a dozen jute mills in the state. The state government had blamed Central government’s faulty policy for raw jute crisis.
