Price of India’s benchmark Shankar-6 cotton has shown a considerable growth in H1 2021, the highest in a decade. It is expected to rise further in the coming months to reach ₹52,027.76 per candy by the end of 2021 from ₹49,012.50 per candy in June 2021. This can be attributed to increasing purchase by domestic cotton mills and demand from overseas market.

The price of Shankar-6 was ₹41,073.08 per candy in December 2020, which rose considerably by 9.71 per cent to reach ₹45,062.96 per candy in Q1 2021. It again shot up by 8.76 per cent to ₹49,012.50 per candy in June 2021 over the price in March 2021, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market analysis tool TexPro.

According to industry experts, spinning mills are receiving better margins owing to a robust demand for cotton yarn. Exporters are also receiving higher orders from Bangladesh for cotton yarn. Due to the increase in demand for cotton yarn in domestic and overseas markets, spinners are ready to purchase cotton at higher prices.
