All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) chairman Syed Ali Ahsan recently urged the government to direct Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) to remove unjustified arrears from gas bills and fully sort out issues regarding subsidy and loss per share with the government. SNGPL issued gas bills at full tariff for re-gasified liquefied natural gas for June.

The finance ministry had advised to use the average exchange rate of the whole month. However, SNGPL used a higher rate which is beyond comprehension, Ahsan said.

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), in its meeting on September 27 last year, had announced a regionally competitive gas tariff for five zero rated sectors.

While the Lahore High Court in its order dated May 2 this year directed SNGPL to issue gas bills on the 10th of every month after receiving government subsidy, SNGPL is working contrary to the court order, he alleged.

Due to the uncertainty in the gas pricing, the industry is reluctant to take any new investment decisions, Pakistani media reports quoted Ahsan as saying. (DS)
