Some trying to create unrest over wages: Bangla minister

Some people are trying to create unrest in Bangladesh over the minimum wage of readymade garment sector workers ahead of the 11th parliamentary election, according to state minister for labour Mohammad Mujibul Haque Chunnu, who cautioned that the government would adopt a zero-tolerance policy for such elements and strongly suppress them.

The minister’s statement came after an emergency meeting with the Crisis Management Core Committee in Dhaka recently.

The government had recently published a gazette on November 25 fixing the minimum monthly wage of readymade garment factory workers at Tk 8,000.

Many Left-wing labour organisations have demanded a minimum wage of Tk 16,000 a month for the garment workers considering inflation and wages for other workers. (DS)
