Textiles sector will help build a self-reliant India and the government is particularly focusing on upgrading skills, financial assistance and integrating the sector with the latest technology, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said while addressing an international webinar on textile traditions organised by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) yesterday.

To assist weavers in continuing to make world class products, India wants to learn both global and domestic best practices, he said. “The exchange of ideas and sharing of best practices in this webinar will create new avenues for collaboration,” he was quoted as saying in an official press release.

Prime Minister Modi lauded ICCR and the Uttar Pradesh Institute of Design for their efforts in bringing professionals from different countries to participate in the webinar themed ‘Weaving Relations: Textile Traditions’.

Highlighting the rich textile traditions of India’s tribal communities, he said a vibrant textile sector will add strength to women empowerment efforts.
