Thai textile & clothing exports slide in Jan-April '16

Continuing with the downward seen in recent months, exports of textile and clothing from the Southeast Asian nation of Thailand declined by 6.8 per cent to $2.093 billion in the first four months of 2016, compared to $2.245 billion earnings in comparable period last year, data from the Thai Garment Manufacturers Association showed.

Segment-wise, textile exports dropped by 6.08 per cent year-on-year to $1.299 billion, while garment exports decreased by 7.96 per cent to $793.11 million during January-April 2016, according to the association.

In the textile category, woven fabric exports fetched $418.84 million during the four-month period, followed by yarn and man-made filaments with $238.88 million and synthetic filament and staple fibres with $227.19 million.

Similarly, among apparel, man-made fibre garment exports were valued at $249.53 million, followed by cotton garments at $198.71 million, and garments of other textile materials at $175.25 million.

In terms of major destinations of Thai garment exports, the US led the pack with $277.80 million, whereas the 28-member EU accounted for $173.34 million, Japan $123.75 million, and China (including Hong Kong) $48.01 million.

Thai clothing exports to the other nine members of Asean saw maximum drop of 14.06 per cent during the period under review. (RKS)
