This was the provocative message delivered by Professor Franz Josef Radermacher of Ulm University at the recent Dornbirn Global Fibers Conference (GFC) in Austria.
Radermacher, whose new book All-In has ignited debate across Germany, warned that the EU’s Green Deal risks becoming a costly “climate prison” that weakens industry while failing to address the wider problem. His numbers are stark: cutting a ton of CO* inside the EU currently costs around €*,***, whereas preventing deforestation or restoring ecosystems in developing countries can deliver the same saving for as little as €**, with immediate global benefit. Yet just three percent of EU climate funds flow to such measures. He argues that Europe must rebalance its approach, targeting every euro where it achieves the greatest impact.
