  • Trump has threatened to “substantially” raise tariffs on Indian exports to the US over New Delhi's continued imports and resale of Russian oil.
  • In response, India's MEA called the move “unjustified and unreasonable,” defending its actions as necessary for energy security after Europe redirected traditional supplies.
  • The ministry also pointed out ongoing US and EU trade with Russia in various sectors.
After President Donald Trump threatened to ‘substantially’ raise tariffs on Indian exports to the United States over New Delhi’s buying of Russian oil, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) yesterday said the targeting of India is ‘unjustified and unreasonable’.

“India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

“India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security,” the Indian ministry said in a statement.

“India began importing from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the conflict. The United States at that time actively encouraged such imports by India for strengthening global energy markets stability,” the ministry said.

“The very nations criticising India are themselves indulging in trade with Russia. Unlike our case, such trade is not even a vital national compulsion,” it noted.

Europe-Russia trade includes not just energy, but also fertilisers, mining products, chemicals, iron and steel and machinery and transport equipment. The United States continues to import from Russia uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, palladium for its electric vehicles industry, fertilisers as well as chemicals, the ministry added.
