  • July receipts grew by 2 per cent YoY to $338 billion, while outlays jumped by 10 per cent YoY to $630 billion, a record high for the month.

The US government's budget deficit increased by 19 per cent year on year (YoY) in July this year to $291 billion despite customs duty collections from President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs rising by nearly $21 billion, according to the treasury department.

Outlays are growing faster than receipts. Receipts for the month grew by 2 per cent YoY to $338 billion, while outlays jumped by 10 per cent YoY to $630 billion, a record high for the month.

As July this year had fewer business days than last year, adjusting for the difference would have increased receipts by about $20 billion, resulting in a deficit of about $271 billion, global newswires reported.

Net customs receipts in July grew to about $27.7 billion from about $7.1 billion in the corresponding month last year due to higher tariff rates.

For the first 10 months of this US fiscal, customs duties were worth $135.7 billion, up by $73 billion, or 116 per cent YoY.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told a TV channel recently that the growing US tariff revenue will make it tough for the Supreme Court to rule against Trump's import taxes if a case related to the issue reaches the apex court.
