US gross job gains from opening and expanding private-sector establishments in the first quarter (Q1) this year were 7.4 million—a decrease of 354,000 jobs from Q4 2024, according to the Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS).

Over this period, gross job losses from closing and contracting private-sector establishments were 7.2 million—a decrease of 258,000 jobs quarter on quarter (QoQ), a BLS release said.

Gross job gains are the sum of increases in employment due to expansions at existing establishments and the addition of new jobs at opening establishments. Gross job losses are the result of contractions in employment at existing establishments and the loss of jobs at closing establishments.

In Q1 2025, gross job gains represented 5.6 per cent of private-sector employment. Gross job gains at expanding establishments totalled 5.9 million jobs in Q1 2025. Opening establishments accounted for 1.6 million of the jobs gained in the quarter.

Gross job losses in Q1 2025 represented 5.4 per cent of private-sector employment. Contracting establishments lost 5.9 million jobs in the quarter, while closing establishments lost 1.4 million jobs.
