This is the first in-person discussion since US President Donald Trump levied retaliatory tariffs on imports from India due to purchase of Russian oil.
The next formal negotiation round will be scheduled based on the outcome of today’s meeting, which is not an ‘official round of negotiations’, according to domestic media reports.
The US trade delegation's planned visit to India during August 25-29 for the sixth round of BTA talks was postponed after the United States levied hefty 50-per cent tariffs on India. Weekly virtual consultations have continued since then.
The development follows Trump’s marked shift in tone when he said last week that his team was continuing negotiations to address trade barriers with India.
