  • President Donald Trump has indicated that the US may impose 20–25 per cent tariffs on Indian imports unless a trade deal is reached by August 1.
  • Citing high Indian tariffs, Trump warned of a broader 15–20 per cent 'world tariff' for countries without separate deals.
  • While US officials say talks need more time, India claims strong progress and interest in opening market access.
The United States may impose 20-25 per cent tariffs on imports from India, President Donald Trump yesterday said, cautioning that the final levy is yet to be arrived at as the two countries continue to hold talks on a proposed trade deal ahead of an August 1 deadline.

"India has been a good friend, but India has charged basically more tariffs, almost more than any other country," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One as he returned to Washington from a five-day visit to Scotland.

A day before, Trump said most partners that do not negotiate separate trade deals would soon face tariffs of 15-20 per cent on their exports to the United States, well above the broad 10-per cent tariff he imposed in April. His administration will notify some 200 countries soon of their new ‘world tariff’ rate.

US trade representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer told a TV channel that the talks with India need more time, noting Trump wants good deals, not fast ones.

India has shown “strong interest in opening portions of its market” though its trade policy had long focused on protecting domestic interests, Greer said.

Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said last week that India was making ‘fantastic’ progress in the US trade talks.
