  • US has lowered the de minimis tariff on low-value Chinese imports (up to $800) from 120 per cent to 54 per cent, effective May 14.
  • It has retained the $100 duty on postal shipments from China, but a planned increase to $200 from June 1 has been cancelled.
  • This move follows a breakthrough in US-China trade talks, including 90-day mutual tariff reductions starting Wednesday.
US government has reduced the de minimis tariff rate on low-value Chinese imports worth up to $800 from 120 per cent to 54 per cent, effective May 14, President Donald J Trump said in a White House executive order on Monday.

However, the government will maintain a separate $100 duty on postal shipments of such goods, which has been in place since May 2, 2025. A planned increase to $200, set for June 1, has been cancelled.

The decision comes after a recent breakthrough in trade negotiations between the US and China, with both nations agreeing to a 90-day pause in their ongoing tariff dispute. As part of the agreement, the US will reduce tariffs on Chinese imports from 145 per cent to 30 per cent, while China will lower its tariffs on US goods from 125 per cent to 10 per cent, both changes taking effect from May 14.

Previously, goods shipped from China through postal channels and valued at up to $800 qualified for a duty-free exemption and faced limited customs checks.
