US textile & apparel exports stable in Jan-July '19

The exports of textile and apparel from United States were down 0.37 per cent year-on-year in the first seven months of this year. The value of exports stood at $13.537 billion during January-July 2019 compared to $13.588 billion in the corresponding period last year, according to data from the Office of Textiles and Apparel, US department of commerce.

Category-wise, apparel exports increased by 4.42 per cent year-on-year to $3.492 billion, while textile mill products dipped 1.93 per cent to $10.045 billion during the first seven months of 2019.

Among apparel, the highest growth of 54.27 per cent was registered in exports of men's and boy's sport & dress coats, whereas a maximum decline of 27.77 per cent was seen in exports of women's and girl's suit-type jackets & coats.

Among textile mill products, yarn exports declined by 4.55 per cent year-on-year to $2.553 billion, while fabric exports decreased by 1.63 per cent to $5.295 billion and made-up article exports decreased by 0.53 per cent to $2.196 billion.

Country-wise, Mexico and Canada together accounted for nearly half of the total US textile and clothing exports during the period under review. The US supplied $3.557 billion worth of textiles and apparel to Mexico during the seven-month period, followed by $3.082 billion to Canada and $962.777 million to Honduras.

In recent years, the US textile and clothing exports have remained in the range of $22-25 billion per annum. In 2014, they stood at $24.418 billion, while the figure was $23.622 billion in 2015, $22.124 billion in 2016, $22.671 billion in 2017 and $23.467 billion in 2018. (PC)
