US textile & apparel exports up 3.51% in 2018

After a slight increase in 2017, exports of textile and apparel from United States further increased by 3.51 per cent year-on-year in 2018. The value of exports stood at $23.467 billion last year compared to $22.671 billion in 2017 and $22.124 billion in 2016, according to data from the Office of Textiles and Apparel, US department of commerce.

Category-wise, apparel exports rose 6.38 per cent year-on-year to $6.077 billion, whereas textile mill products increased 2.54 per cent to $17.389 billion last year.

Among apparel, the highest growth of 65.14 per cent was registered in exports of men’s and boys’ ensembles, whereas a maximum decline of 10.20 per cent was seen in exports of women’s and girls’ other knit shirts.

Among textile mill products, yarn exports increased slightly by 1.84 per cent year-on-year to $4.439 billion, while fabric and made-up article exports also increased by 2.98 per cent and 2.32 per cent respectively to $9.127 billion and $3.822 billion.

Country-wise, Mexico and Canada together accounted for nearly half of the total US textile and clothing exports during the period under review. The US supplied $6.356 billion worth of textiles and apparel to Mexico last year, followed by $5.340 billion to Canada and $1.548 billion to Honduras.

In recent years, the US textile and clothing exports have remained in the range of $22-25 billion per annum. In 2011, they stood at $22.432 billion, while the figure was $22.656 billion in 2012, $23.534 billion in 2013, $24.259 billion in 2014, $23.622 billion in 2015, $22.124 billion in 2016 and $22.671 in 2017.
