This comes in response to China’s newly announced policy to enforce large-scale export controls on nearly all products it manufactures—along with some it does not—evenly affecting all global trading partners without exception.
Calling China’s move “extraordinarily aggressive” and “a moral disgrace in dealing with other Nations,” Trump stated the policy appears to be part of a long-devised strategy aimed at restructuring global trade norms in Beijing’s favour. The Chinese announcement was delivered in what Trump described as a “hostile letter to the World”, signalling a unilateral shift in China’s trade engagement.
“Based on the fact that China has taken this unprecedented position, and speaking only for the United States… we will impose a Tariff of 100 per cent on China, over and above any Tariff that they are currently paying,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Friday.
In a further retaliatory measure, the US will also enforce export controls on all critical software exports beginning the same day. Trump emphasised the seriousness of China’s action, stating, “It is absolutely unheard of in International Trade, and the rest is History.”
The announcement marks one of the most sweeping trade moves yet in the ongoing economic rivalry between the two nations and is expected to significantly impact global supply chains and trade flows.
