Vietnam's fabric & garment exports up 6.7% in Jan-April

Fabric and garment exports from the Southeast Asian nation of Vietnam increased at 6.7 per cent year-on-year to $6.852 billion in the first four months of 2016, according to the preliminary data released by the customs IT & statistics department, general department of customs, Vietnam's ministry of finance.
 
Vietnam also exported 339,219 tons of yarn earning $840.218 million during the four-month period, registering an increase of 13.1 per cent and 5 per cent year-on-year, respectively, according to the data. Thus, Vietnam's total earnings from yarn, fabric and garment exports stood at $7.692 billion during the period under review. 
 
On the other hand, Vietnam imported 356,847 tons of cotton and 262,049 tons of yarn, valued at $547.833 million and $473.810 million, respectively, during the same period. 
 
Meanwhile, Vietnam's fabric imports soared by 5.8 per cent year over year to $3.125 billion during the first four months of this year. Thus, Vietnam's total spending on import of cotton, yarn and fabric amounted to $4.146 billion, which is more than half the value of total textile exports.
 
In 2015, Vietnam's fabric and garment exports grew at 9 per cent year-on-year to $22.801 billion. (RKS)
