Vietnam’s Ministry of Home Affairs recently proposed to the government a 7-per cent hike in regional minimum wage, applicable from January 1.

If approved, the regional monthly minimum wage will rise by VND 250,000-VND 350,000 (~$9-$15), depending on region, a domestic news agency reported.

From July 1 this year, the country’s regional minimum wage applies across 34 provinces and centrally administered cities following the restructuring of local administrative units.

The monthly minimum wage then was raised to VND 4.96 million ($194.50) in Region 1, VND 4.41 million ($172.90) in Region 2, VND 3.86 million ($151.30) in Region 3 and VND 3.45 million ($135.30) in Region 4.

The hourly minimum wage was also adjusted between VND 16,600 ($0.65) and VND 23,800 ($0.93) depending on the region.

The National Wage Council had put forward a proposal to the government in July this year to raise the regional minimum wage by 7.2 per cent from January 1.
