Primary Textile Sector (PTS) has expanded dramatically with an investment of almost Taka10000 crore in last four years, attacting a total investment to over Taka18000 crore.

Almost 77 new spinning mills, 2588626 new spindles and 45865 new rotors have been added during the period 2002 to 2005.

Currently a total of around 4837925 spindles and 102169 open-and-rotors have been set up in the country under PTS.

M A Awal, Chairman, Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), informed that the deferment of yarn import through the Benapole land port in India on March 9, 2002 encouraged the local investors to shift from other sectors to PTS sector.

Due to the expansion, almost eight lakh jobs were created in the country.

During 2004-05, the total yarn output including auto-cone and non auto-cone stood at 939.79 million kilograms, which could fulfill 100 percent domestic demand for textile, terry towel and sweater, fabrics for knit RMG and 50 percent fabrics for woven RMG.

Awal believes that the PTS was nearing its peak and now the focus should be on developing technology and resources.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Knitwear Manufactures & Exporters Association (BKMEA) and Bangladesh Terry Towel & Linen Manufactures and Exporters Association (BTTLMEA) were also requested to take active part in growth of the sector, Awal informed.
