Govt awards Kannur 'The Town of Export Excellence'

Union Commerce Ministry has awarded the Kannur, a town in north Kerala, 'The Town of Export Excellence' because of its Rs300 crore textile exports.
Kannur-based Kerala Handloom Export Organisation (KHEO) is dedicated to enhance technology and is also working hard to develop this town as a 'textile city' by end of this decade.
KHEO President, C Jayachandran, said that machinery advancement and product diversification are essential to compete and sustain in international market.
Kannur accounts 90 percent of textile exports of Kerala.
Kannur has been exporting textiles since 1954, ships textiles to about 25 countries, mostly in Europe
Jayachandran said that they are aiming to export textile products to atleast 50 countries and to cross Rs500 crore mark in next two years.
Union Government has expressed keen interest to strengthen Kannur textile industry with technical and financial assistance of the Tamil Nadu-based Handloom Export Promotion Council and is planning to set up a textile park in Nadukani.
