Garment sales plummet 29%

In calendar year 2006, garment sales plunged 29 percent, according to statistics released by Department of Commerce.

CNMI's gross revenue collection fell 6.7 percent and revenues from taxes and fees also dropped 13 percent.

From January to March 2006 garment sales accounted $125.8 million compared $177.6 million last year, a fall $51.8 million.

Garment sales for calendar year 2005 dropped to $650.8 million from $826 million in 2004.

After the end of quota regime Saipan's garment manufacturers have been facing heat from competition across the world and as result, about 10 factories have closed down in recent times.
