Leather export value down in July 2005 – Jan 2006

Leather came down to fourth position in its group during January, 2006 from its third position in the previous month. Its exports in this month amounted to Rs. 1,186.88 million as against Rs. 1,398.16 million in December, 2005 and Rs. 1,968.68 million in January, 2005 showing a decrease of 15.11 percent over December, 2005 and 39.71 percent over January, 2005.

Exports of this item during July - January (2005 – 06) totalled Rs. 9,780.32 million as against Rs. 10,642.99 million during the corresponding period of last year showing a fall of 8.11 percent. In terms of quantity 9,701,694 sq. meter of leather was exported during July - January (2005 – 06) as against 11,406,017 sq. meters exported during the corresponding period of last year showing a decrease of 14.96 percent.

The main buyers of leather during July - January (2005 – 06) were Hong Kong (Rs. 2,457.13 million), Korea Rep. of (Rs. 1,157.86 million), Italy (Rs. 1,133.82 million), China (Rs. 1,065.72 million), Germany (Rs. 496.29 million), Vietnam (Rs.433.51 million), Japan (Rs. 373.64 million), South Africa (Rs. 278.26 million) and Spain (Rs. 253.15 million) whose combined share in total exports of leather was 78.21 percent as against their combined share of 71.67 percent during the same period of last year.
