Due to increase in Bt cotton acreage in recent years cotton production in the country is poised to cross 25,000,000 bales for the first time in the next year.
Out of the total cotton acreage of 8,900,000 hectares, nearly 15 percent acreage is under Bt cotton.
Productivity of cottonseeds and implementation of good farm practice by farmers has led to the higher output.
Consumption of cotton also increased to 21,500,000 bales, which was perched at 1,800,000 bales due to rapid growth of the textile industry, spinning capacity and abolishment of quota regime.
Against the world average of eight kg per capita cotton consumption, India still consumes less than three kgs.
