Total 106 Special Economic Zones (SEZ) have been approved, of which 65 are located in states like Andhra Pradesh (20), Maharashtra (18), Tamil Nadu (16), and Gujarat (11).
Board on Approval (BoA) is trying to sort out this uneven distribution before the total number of approved SEZs reached 150.
BoA has decided to stop giving approval to IT SEZs as 66 IT SEZs have already got final approval.
In next BoA meeting on August 8, it is expected that total number of SEZs will reach 150.
Government is now supporting companies to set up unit in their states.
States which have less number of SEZs are Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chandigarh, Delhi and Jharkhand.
