African Cotton and Textile Industry is in a bad shape.
With the expiration of the Multi Fibre Agreement on January 1, 2005, Africa has lost over 37 percent of its market share in the global textile industry. Under the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act, (AGOA) it has also lost about 30 percent of the sales to the USA.
There is also a threat from the Chinese Textile Industry. With their capacity and competitiveness China can dominate the US market by 78 percent and as well as the world market.
Africa needs to improve the unity among its countries, from the first stage of growing cotton all the way to garment making. The need of the time is to make partner within the region and increase the pace in the regional assimilation procedure.
