Gold import from North Korea rises

Thailand has imported semi-manufactured gold from North Korea, 500 kg of gold in April and another 800 kg in May before the United Nations ban on sales of luxury items to Pyongyang in October.

Thailand paid the isolated communist state a total of 1.03 billion Baht (about $28 million).

According to the sources from Customs Department, Thailand is a major jewellery maker and has imported nearly 80 tons of gold from 22 countries in 2006.
