During the first Buri Festival held on December 27, 2006 in San Juan, people weaved a 2.4 km long and over one meter wide mat and they expect to make it to Guinness Book of World Records for this. But they were unable to keep up to the challenge of weaving a four km sleeping mat.

This festival is idea of local officials for promoting San Juan as Buri Capital of Philippines, under leadership of its Mayor Benjamin Sarmiento. Buri is a traditional variety of palm.

Local folks were seen parade longest buri mat in the world in traditional costumes by large number of residents and tourists.

Women and uneducated youth of San Juan make sleeping mats and other finished products from buri.

According to Sarmiento, buri materials were used to weave costumes for paraders. Hence quantity of Buri decreased and the target of four km long mat could not be achieved.
