Blaze consumes goods worth N1bn at Onitsha market

Fire erupted in Onitsha Main Market on February 18, 2007, affected certain portions of Bright Street. It consumed commodities worth approximately N1 billion.

Blaze caused losses to over 2,000 merchants but luckily no one was injured. Textile, bags and footwear businesses were badly damaged.

Information Commissioner Chinyere Okunna paid a visit to the spot on February 19, 2007. She assured that an inquiry will be commissioned to ascertain cause of the fire and that Anambra Government will help in bringing things back to normal at Onitsha.

She added that since Onitsha Main Market is the commercial hub of South East region, occurrence of blaze has disappointed the State Government.
