In 2006, exports of the country stood at LKR50.8 billion compared to LKR56.2 billion of previous year.

However, India exported goods worth LKR187.6 billion compared to LKR145.62 billion in previous year.

Other major exports during this period were cotton and machinery. The decline in the exports is witnessed even after bilateral trade pact signed between both the countries for free access to each others' markets for over 4,000 goods.
