Leather exports from Brazil steps-up

Leather exports from Brazil to Saudi Arbia went up in the first ten months of 2007 from US $12,130 from January to October 2006 to $133,450 in the same period last year. It accounted for nearly a thousand percent increase.

Confederation of Brazilian Hides and Skins Industries (CICB) confirmed the statistics that showed that from January to October, Brazil exported an approximate of $1.82 billion which makes it a 20.5 percent increase from the same period last year. More than 3,41,150 leather items were shipped to over 90 countries across the world.

Leather occupies a significant part of exports made by Brazil so much so that it has already reached US $1.6 billion.

The leading buyer countries for Brazilian leather until October were Italy, with $510 million of imports; China, at $417 million; Hong Kong, at $204 million; and the United States, at $193 million. Besides, Tunisia also emerged as one of the major Arab countries to import Brazilian leather.
