wal-mart insists on smart tags on prescription medicines sold from its outlets. the technology is recommended by the us food and drug administration (fda) to check counterfeit medicines. the us drug supply chain is expected to be rfid-compliant by '07.
while exporters are concerned about rfid, domestic it companies are all set to tap it to boost their bottomlines. according to frost & sullivan, the market for rfid hardware, software, and services will exceed e5bn in '07. according to another industry projection, one trillion rfid tags will be required by '12.
the rfid movement is gaining momentum in india too. wipro has equipped arvind mills apparel store inside wipro's electronic city campus, as the country's first retail store selling rfid-tagged clothes. almost all it bigwigs, including infosys, wipro, tcs, satyam and cognizant have a major rfid practice and are believed to be eyeing the indian market. many of them are learnt to have lobbied hard for the recently-allocated spectrum for rfid.
