Leading airline of the world based in Dubai, Emirates will deploy radio frequency identification tags to ensure smooth passage of cargo.
Plans are afoot to introduce active tagging system, which will track unit load devices (ULDs), pallets and other assets, and then gradually bring in passive UHF tags on cargo.
Called SkyCargo, Emirates' freight division has its cargo information system hosted by SITA, which provides telecommunications and other services to the air transport industry.
SITA system being legacy based, has its own limitations.
Now, in order gain from the latest technological developments and better efficiencies and transparency within the supply chain, the airline has decided to build a new-generation cargo system on a modern technology platform in lieu of the existing core system.
Emirates hopes to complete the first phase implementation of the new system, by December. Thereafter, a six to eight months period will be spent on putting the new system on test the system extensively.
The system will enable its customers view their shipments on the Internet, while in SkyCargo's custody in a totally paperless environment. Finally, the airline expects to completely deploy the RFID system by the third quarter of next year.
