Restrictions on China and a demand for value-added apparel like embroidered fabric have helped in increasing Indian exports of apparel and clothing to the US, said Kishore Shah, former Chairman, Federation of Indian Export Organisation (FIEO).

The exports in the above two categories grew by about 28 percent compared to the previous year export figures.

Moreover, apparel exports amounted to $7bn, of which 40 percent were exported to the US.

India's overall textile exports in 2005 were $14 billion, which revealed 15 percent growth over the preceding year, said Premal Udani, President, Clothing Manufacturers' Association of India (CMAI).

What is more encouraging for Indian textile exports to the US is 83 percent of the importers in the US have a positive opinion about India and would be willing to buy Indian products, reported American Importers' Association (AIA).

In the next year, the AIA expects an increase in Indian exports from all industries, especially textile and jewellery.
